Seven Spice Seared Ahi Tuna on Mixed Greens

~This dish is on just about every menu in America. Once I tasted it, I never ordered it again. Not because it wasn’t delicious- it absolutely is; that’s why it’s on so many menus. Simply, it is too easy to cook, to bother having to pay for it. And that tends to be my criteria for eating out; if I can make it better at home, why bother going out for it? As you skim over the list of ingredients, you’ll see very quickly what a cheat the “7 spices” are in this dish. Not that it makes it any less tasty. Below is an illustration of the end product, but this is not my picture.

Ingredients:
6-8oz sashimi grade Ahi tuna steak
1 scallion, thinly shredded
mixed greens salad mix
avocado, sliced
five spice powder
salt
fresh ground pepper
olive oil

Dressing:
¼ tsp water
¼ tsp sugar
½ tsp seasoned rice vinegar or Chinese red vinegar
1 tsp light soy sauce
1 tsp sesame oil
1-2 turns of fresh ground pepper

Directions:

  1. lightly rub salt, fresh ground pepper, and five spice powder over both sides of tuna steak
  2. set aside tuna for 15min
  3. warm pan on medium high heat, coat lightly with olive oil
  4. sear both sides of tuna, approx 1-2 min each side
  5. remove and place tuna on cutting board, slice 1/3" thick
  6. in a medium bowl, combine ingredients for dressing
  7. add mixed greens and scallions into dressing and toss
  8. place dressed salad onto plate

  2. Haha- hey! I see you've been perusing =) Usually Uwaijimaya. They also have them packaged and frozen in 4-5oz portions.

The tuna steaks at Costco are monsters so if you're going to use those, I would portion those down a bit. Wherever you get them, look at the color and see if you can detect any odors. Fresh fish does not smell fishy. I saw some yesterday at Costco that had an odd color about them.
